Can that once made be made undone?
Escape behind the setting sun?
Do caverns deep beneath the earth
hold out hope for life's re-birth?

Or gazing towards the starry skies
with supplicating scripture lines
call out to powers still unseen
to wake us from this bitter dream

Upon this stage we play our part
till curtain close and houselight dark
And if by chance we win renown
fame does not outlast the mound

Wherefore eyes to witness sights?
Exquisite grandeur oft delights
But light will fade and neurons rot
and all such visions are forgotten

And why then ears with which to glean
a lover's sigh or child's dream?
And music, Music! Oh sweet sound
Eternal silence underground

But to be nothing, after all
is not like any thing at all
Our musing ends when the carriage calls
so let us muse until night falls

Then at that moment, at the brink
will I find solace when I think
although my time to be was brief
to be at all - beyond belief!
